Cardio-Respiratory Department

General introduction

The Cardio-Respiratory Department consists of specialists in all aspects of cardiac and respiratory investigation and diagnosis.

We offer a wide range of invasive and non-invasive tests to investigate and diagnose heart and lung disease, as well as sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea. Some of the tests we provide include:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Echocardiograms (Echo)
  • Stress echocardiograms (Stress Echo)
  • Lung function studies
  • Spirometry
  • Sleep studies
  • CPAP services
  • Pulse oximeters
  • Exercise stress-testing
  • Ambulatory ECG monitoring
  • Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
  • Coronary angiograms
  • Permanent pacemaker implantation

The Cardio-Respiratory Department works alongside the Trust's Cardiology and Respiratory services to provide diagnostic investigations to inpatients, outpatients and to patients referred from GPs.

The majority of our patients are adult, but we do also provide a service to support children’s (paediatric) care.

Opening times

How to access this service

We accept referrals to the service from hospital doctors (either in outpatient clinic or for inpatients during their stay in hospital). Appointments will be sent through the post, or occasionally patients will be contacted by telephone, if there has been a cancellation.

GPs can refer patients to the service through the open access service for the following:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)

  • Echocardiogram

  • Ambulatory 24-hour monitoring

  • Ambulatory 24-hour blood pressure monitoring.

Following GP referral an appointment will be sent by post (occasionally by telephone if there has been a cancellation).

Please note: not all tests and clinics are provided at both hospitals. Your appointment letter will state which hospital you should attend and the location of your appointment.
