Rheumatology

General introduction

Rheumatology covers the treatment of medical disorders that affect the musculoskeletal system, particularly the joints and surrounding soft tissues.

Within our Rheumatology Department, we care for adult patients with a wide range of inflammatory conditions, connective tissue diseases, and for patients with osteoporosis.

We offer extensive assessments and treatment plans, and provide support and guidance on how to help manage your condition, including pain management advice.

We treat conditions both therapeutically and with non-drug approaches, including physiotherapy. Most patients that we look after are seen in the Outpatient Clinic, or attend the Planned Investigation Unit for specific treatment.

How to access this service

Your GP will refer you to Rheumatology if they feel it is appropriate. If you have any questions about your symptoms before you are seen by the team, please direct them to your GP.

Patients may also be referred by the MSK CATS (physiotherapy) service after referral into their care for assessment of the patient’s symptoms and triage to the appropriate service who will then manage and treat the symptoms as required.
