Ward A1 / Acute Medical Unit


General introduction

The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) is a 36 bed unit, which has five side room cubicles for isolation and three enhanced care unit pods. The average length of stay for patients on the unit is around one-and-half to two days. 

After a patient's stay on AMU, they will be transferred to other areas of the hospital, including specialist wards.

The ward receives medical admissions from the Accident and Emergency Department.

About the team

The unit is staffed by acute medicine consultants with backgrounds in a variety of medical fields including respiratory medicine, renal medicine, endocrinology, cardiology and general internal medicine consultants.

In addition to doctors, the team also includes nurses, a ward manager and nursing matrons plus advanced clinical practitioners (ACPs) / trainee ACPs. Advanced clinical practitioners who often have several years of experience within the NHS, as nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and midwives within the clinical speciality. They apply their clinical skills and decision making to provide a high level of knowledge and clinical care to our patients and their families.

There will be a senior nurse in charge of every shift.
