How to access this service

Patients are admitted to Ward A4 from our Emergency Department and Same Day Emergency Care unit.

If a patient is admitted to Ward A4, it is likely they have either been transferred from our Emergency Department or another inpatient ward, and require surgical care.

Upon arrival, patients will be welcomed to the ward by a member of the team and allocated to one of the beds. The nurse responsible for the patient's care will introduce themselves and explain your plan of care.

As patients are admitted to Ward A4, a few nursing checks will be completed including blood pressure, heart rate and other clinical observations. A few patient risk assessments will also be completed, and patients' will be asked about their social circumstances. This is to ensure we keep patients safe during their stay and complete appropriate referrals to the wider Multi-disciplinary Team if required.

A patient's length of stay on A4 will depend on the type of surgery they have undergone, their medical history, their treatment plan, and their post-operative recovery.

About the team

The nursing team consists of highly skilled surgical nurses, sisters/charge nurses, a ward manager, a matron, a lead nurse, and an associate chief nurse.

The ward manager is present on most weekdays. The matron and lead nurse can be contacted to visit the ward if necessary.

  • Nathan Taylor-Thompson, Ward Manager
  • Lynda Ellison, Matron
  • Lucy Parry, Lead Nurse
Useful information

Discharge planning starts from the patient's admission to the ward. The social circumstances and level of independence is looked at to ensure that once the patient becomes medically ready, the ward staff can be proactive in supporting them with a safe and effective discharge to their home or next place of care with appropriate support, if required.

During a patient's stay on the ward, they will be reviewed daily by the Surgical Team to monitor their recovery. The nursing staff will create an individual plan of care for you.

Every patient on the ward has an estimated date of discharge that the Multi-disciplinary Team will work towards. Read more about preparing for going home from hospital.

As Ward A4 is an acute surgical ward, once the acute phase of a patient's care is completed, we will support the patient to move to a more appropriate place of care. If patients require support at home or are being discharged to an alternative place of care, patients will step-down from Ward A4 whilst they await this additional support to be put in place.

Ward B3 at Halton Hospital Nightingale Building is the 'step-down' ward to support patients with the next part of their inpatient journey.

If patients do not require additional support at home, they will be moved to the Discharge Lounge while they are awaiting medications to take home and transport to be arranged.
