Ward B18 - Respiratory care


General introduction

Ward B18 specialises in acute respiratory care. The 28 bed ward consists of male and female beds and three cubicles for patients who require our specialist respiratory care.

The remaining patient beds consist of four Bioquell pods for isolation purposes and a seven bed Enhanced Respiratory Care Unit for patients with high dependency, complex and acute airway management.

How to access this service

Patients are admitted to Ward B18 either through emergency care via the Emergency Department or the Acute Medical Unit (AMU / A1) admissions ward.

Alternatively, patients are admitted via inpatient medical referrals where our respiratory specialist doctors will review the patient and accept them under their care if necessary. 

About the team

The wider team on Ward B18 consists of matron, ward manager and sisters/charge nurses who act as shift co-ordinator and ensure the smooth running of the enhanced respiratory care unit. They are supported by highly trained staff nurses who manage the day-to-day clinical care of the patients and a team of compassionate healthcare assistants.

The team also work closely with the respiratory specialist nurses and physiotherapists, as well as occupational therapy teams and the Acute Care Team.

Medical staff on the ward work on a rotational model, taking turns to manage the care of patients needing enhanced respiratory care.

Dr Ibrahim takes care of the main bays in the ward with junior doctors who rotate every few months to maximise their training.
